How to add a cart countdown timer ("cart reserved for") on Shopify

Quick answer

To add a cart timer on Shopify, create a Cart page timer, write a Title that contains the {timer} placeholder, such as Your cart is reserved for {timer}, and set Minutes (for example 15). Under Once it ends, choose Repeat the countdown, Hide the timer for the buyer or Delete all cart items. Keep At the top of the cart and publish.

What a cart timer is, and what it isn't

A cart timer shows a short countdown on the cart page, usually as a sentence like "Your cart is reserved for 14:32". It reminds shoppers who have already chosen items that now is a good time to check out.

Be clear with yourself about what it does. Shopify doesn't hold inventory for items sitting in a cart: stock is only committed when an order is placed. The timer is a display. It doesn't lock stock for the shopper, so word it in a way that's true for your store.

If items could genuinely sell out (limited drops, one-of-a-kind pieces), a message like "Items in your cart aren't reserved. Check out within {timer} to secure this price" is more honest than promising a reservation.

Your options on Shopify

Shopify's themes don't include a cart countdown. You could build one with custom code in the cart template, but it needs to remember the countdown per shopper, survive page reloads and decide what happens at zero.

Step by step

  1. Create a Cart page timer

Click Create timer, then Select this timer type on Cart page. Cart timers always use Fixed minutes.

  2. Write the sentence

In Title, put {timer} where the countdown should appear, for example Your cart is reserved for {timer}. A cart timer can't be published without {timer} in the title.

  3. Set the length

Enter Minutes, for example 10 or 15. Each shopper's countdown starts the first time they see it and isn't reset by reloading the page.

  4. Choose the end action

Under Once it ends, pick Repeat the countdown, Hide the timer for the buyer or Delete all cart items.

  5. Design it

On the Design tab, choose a Layout (Standard or Balanced), a template Style and colors. Use Spacing to give it room above your cart items.

  6. Place and publish

On the Placement tab, keep At the top of the cart. Click Save and Publish, then add an item to your cart and open the cart page to check.

Cart timers use Fixed minutes: a personal countdown for each shopper.

End actions compared

Once it endsWhat happensGood for
Repeat the countdownA new countdown of the same length startsA gentle, ongoing reminder
Hide the timer for the buyerThe timer disappears for that shopperA one-time nudge that doesn't nag
Delete all cart itemsThe shopper's cart is emptied and the page reloadsGenuinely time-limited drops, used with care

Delete all cart items really empties the shopper's cart. Many shoppers leave a cart open while they compare, and losing it can be frustrating. Use it only when your offer truly expires.

Choosing the position

At the top of the cart shows the timer above your cart contents on the cart page. If you'd rather show it near the checkout button, choose Custom position, add the Countdown Timer — Cart block in the cart template (Add block → Apps) and paste the Timer ID into it.

Some themes use a cart drawer instead of, or as well as, a cart page. The cart timer shows on the cart page, not inside a cart drawer. Many themes, including Shopify's Dawn, let you choose the cart type in Theme settings in the theme editor, so check that setting if shoppers never reach the cart page. See Shopify's help on customizing themes.

Example: a limited sneaker drop

A streetwear store releases 50 pairs at a launch price, valid for checkouts within 10 minutes of adding to cart.

  • Title: Launch price held for {timer}. Stock isn't reserved until you check out.
  • Minutes: 10.
  • Once it ends: Hide the timer for the buyer, so the shopper keeps their cart.
  • Layout Balanced, Timer style Boxes, a dark template Style to match the brand.
  • Placement: At the top of the cart.
Pick a template Style, or Custom, so the cart timer matches your cart page.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Forgot {timer}? The app won't publish a cart timer without it.
  • Don't double up. If you also run a sitewide bar, exclude Cart from it so shoppers see one countdown.
  • Saving resets countdowns. When you save changes to the timer, every shopper's countdown starts fresh.
  • Translate it. Add a translation for each store language in Translations, keeping {timer} in each translated title.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cart timer actually reserve stock?

No. Shopify doesn't hold inventory for items in a cart, and the timer is a display only. Word your message so it's true for your store.

Which timer types can a cart timer use?

Only Fixed minutes. Each shopper gets their own countdown of the length you set.

Does reloading the cart page reset the timer?

No. The countdown is remembered in the shopper's browser. It restarts for everyone only when you save changes to the timer.

Why can't I publish my cart timer?

The Title must contain {timer}. Add it where the countdown should appear.

Can I put the timer near the checkout button?

Yes. Choose Custom position and add the Countdown Timer — Cart block where you want it, with the Timer ID pasted in.
