How to add payment icons and secure checkout badges to your Shopify cart

Quick answer

To add payment icons and a secure checkout badge to your Shopify cart, turn on the Payment icons and Secure & safe checkout blocks in Footer group of Nexora's Cart editor. Payment icons shows the payment methods enabled on your store, or a custom image. Secure & safe checkout shows a provider logo you choose under Payment gateway providers, or your own image, with a short message.

Why show payment and trust signals in the cart

Just before paying, shoppers want two quick answers: can I pay the way I like, and is this safe? Seeing familiar payment logos and a short reassurance line next to the checkout button answers both without a click.

These signals work because they're factual. Show the payment methods you really accept and a message that's true of your checkout. Shopify's checkout is hosted by Shopify, so a line such as Secure checkout powered by Shopify is accurate for most stores; invented seals or guarantees are not.

  • Payment choice: shoppers looking for PayPal, Shop Pay or a pay-later option see it before they click checkout.
  • Reassurance: a short, true line about secure checkout answers a common worry, especially for first-time visitors.
  • Consistency: the same logos shoppers will see at checkout, so nothing feels unexpected.

Your options on Shopify

Many Shopify themes can show payment icons in the footer of every page, based on the payment methods enabled on your store. That's helpful, but shoppers rarely scroll to the footer while their cart is open. A theme's cart drawer usually doesn't include payment icons or a trust message.

Step by step: add the badges

  1. Turn on Payment icons

In the Cart editor, switch on Payment icons in Footer group. By default it shows the icons of the payment methods enabled on your store.

  2. Use your own image (optional)

Turn on Show custom image, upload a Custom image (for example a single strip of logos) and set Custom image width.

  3. Turn on Secure & safe checkout

Switch on Secure & safe checkout in Footer group and click it.

  4. Pick a logo

Under Payment gateway providers, choose Amazon Pay, Authorize.net, Klarna, Opayo, PayPal, Shop Pay, Skrill, Stripe or None, or upload a Custom image.

  5. Write the message

Edit Content (default Guaranteed secure & safe checkout.). Keep it short and true.

  6. Order the footer

Drag the blocks so the badges sit just below Cart buttons, then click Save.

Store icons or a custom image?

Store's enabled methodsCustom image
Updates when you change payment methodsYes, automaticallyNo, you replace the image yourself
Matches what checkout offersYesOnly while you keep it up to date
Design controlShopify's standard icons in a rowAny image, 50 to 400 px wide
Best forMost storesA branded strip or one combined badge

Example: a store that accepts cards, PayPal and Shop Pay

  • Payment icons: on, using the store's enabled methods (no custom image), so the icons always match what checkout offers.
  • Secure & safe checkout: Payment gateway providers > Shop Pay.
  • Content: Secure checkout. Pay by card, PayPal or Shop Pay.
  • Footer group order: Cart buttons, Secure & safe checkout, Payment icons.

Because the icons come from your store's settings, turning a payment method on or off in Shopify updates the drawer too. A custom image doesn't update itself, so revisit it if you change payment providers.

Message ideas that stay accurate

  • Secure checkout powered by Shopify.
  • Pay in instalments with Klarna, only if Klarna is enabled on your store.
  • Free returns within 30 days, if that's your policy.
  • Questions? We reply within one working day, if you can keep that promise.

Second example: a pay-later store with a branded badge

A furniture store accepts cards, PayPal and Klarna and wants one tidy strip instead of a row of small logos.

  • Payment icons: Show custom image on, a single strip with card, PayPal and Klarna logos, Custom image width 280 px.
  • Secure & safe checkout: Payment gateway providers > Klarna, with no Custom image, so the Klarna logo shows.
  • Content: Secure checkout. Pay later with Klarna where available., with the Klarna part in bold.
  • Footer group order: Cart buttons, Secure & safe checkout, Payment icons.

Because this store uses a custom strip, it updates the image whenever it adds or removes a payment provider, so the drawer never shows a method checkout no longer offers.

Troubleshooting

Most surprises come from which setting wins when two are filled in. Here is how the two blocks behave.

What you seeWhyWhat to do
The Payment icons row is emptyThe icons come from the payment methods enabled in Shopify. A test store with no payment provider set up has nothing to show.Set up payments in Shopify (see payments), or use Show custom image.
Show custom image is on, but the store icons still showUntil an image is uploaded, the block keeps showing your store's icons.Upload a Custom image and click Save.
The provider logo you picked doesn't appearIn Secure & safe checkout, an uploaded Custom image takes priority over Payment gateway providers.Remove the custom image to show the provider logo.
The badge shows a lock and a logo but no textAn empty Content field hides the message line.Add a short, true message to Content.
The custom image looks smaller than the width you setThe image never grows wider than the drawer, so it shrinks to fit on narrow phones.Use a wide, short image that still reads at phone width.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Showing methods you don't accept: avoid custom images with logos for providers you haven't set up.
  • Overclaiming: skip phrases like 100% guaranteed unless you really offer a guarantee.
  • Cluttered footer: one badge plus a row of icons is plenty. Too many logos push the checkout button out of view on phones.
  • Image too large: use Custom image width to keep custom images small and sharp.
  • Translations: translate the Content message on the Translations page.

Need shoppers to confirm your policies too? Add a terms checkbox in the same footer.

Frequently asked questions

Which payment icons are shown?

The icons of the payment methods enabled on your store, unless you turn on Show custom image and upload your own.

Can I use my own trust badge image?

Yes. Upload a Custom image in Secure & safe checkout, or in Payment icons with Show custom image.

Which provider logos are included?

Amazon Pay, Authorize.net, Klarna, Opayo, PayPal, Shop Pay, Skrill and Stripe, or None.

Do badges make my checkout more secure?

No. They're reassurance for shoppers. Security comes from Shopify's checkout itself, so keep the message accurate.

Can I change the message?

Yes, in Content. It's a rich text field, so you can bold key words.

Why doesn't the provider logo I selected appear?

If you also uploaded a Custom image in Secure & safe checkout, the image is shown instead. Remove it to show the logo from Payment gateway providers.

Do the icons update when I add a payment method?
